Poetry, geocaching and more goings-on at Police Point Park

Jul 12, 2023 | 10:47 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The MH Interpretive Program has a few options this weekend to shake off any early summer boredom blues.

On July 14, the program will host Poetic Paths at Police Point Park. Participants will explore some of the natural wonders of the park and the observations, or lack thereof, will be used as the basis for poetic creations. Abstract, haiku and narrative are some of the forms of poetry to be explored. No poetry experience is needed, just a bit of creativity.

The experience starts at 10 a.m. from the Nature Centre. Participants are asked to bring a notebook and writing utensils if possible, but supplies will be provided.

On July 16 is Geocaching 101. The event will answer give people a taste of what is essentially a worldwide treasure hunt. A brief information session will start at 10 a.m. and then you’ll have time to find local caches. You can use your phone or rent a GPS unit for $5.

On the same day you can join the MH Interpretive Program for a Historic Building Walk downtown. Walkers can learn about some of the city’s oldest buildings, including the stories, history and architecture. The walk will start at Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. and will last about 60 to 90 minutes.

The interpretive program has also launched its Summer StoryWalk, featuring Treasure by Mirieille Messier until Aug. 12. The StoryWalk is a collaboration between the interpretive program and the Medicine Hat Public Library to support outdoor learning opportunities and encourage fun, out-loud reading opportunities to reinforce literacy skills. After completing the walk participants can receive a coupon during the nature centre’s regular hours that can be redeemed at the library.
