UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: Environment and Climate Change Canada has now issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Cypress County.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says conditions are favourable for funnel clouds and possibly even brief, weak tornadoes in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan today.

The weather service has issued tornado warnings and watches for the communities of Gull Lake, Maple Creek, Swift Current and the surrounding areas. Tornadoes could form early this afternoon quickly and without notice, says Environment Canada. The threat is expected to quickly diminish into the early evening.

Special weather advisories have been issued for southeastern Alberta, stretching from High River to the Saskatchewan boundary. Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for some thunderstorms to produce funnel clouds, starting near noon and lasting until early this evening.

The types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
