DUNMORE, AB – Cypress County announced on Tuesday that its appeal of the initial rejection of funding for financial losses from a storm that struck the area on July 18, 2022, has been rejected.

The storm that struck southern Alberta in 2022 produced an EF2 tornado that struck the Redcliff area causing considerable damage to municipal and individual property. Areas located near Holsom Road experienced the highest levels of damage.

An application was submitted on Oct. 14, 2022, to the Provincial Disaster Recovery Program (DRP) to receive funding for both municipal and personal uninsurable damage losses in last July’s storm. The application was initially rejected on Feb. 6 and an appeal was sent on March 7.

The county received a letter on June 26, from Deputy Premier Mike Ellis informing it that the appeal was also rejected. The county released a statement on Tuesday saying, “We are disappointed but accept that this is the end of the appeal process.”

In the statement from Ellis, he states, “There is no disputing the extraordinary impacts this tornado had on the residents and businesses in Cypress County and your neighbouring communities. The damages to residential properties and small businesses were substantial and I empathize with the efforts required as your community works to recover from this event. The wind event alone does not meet the eligibility criteria for a DRP to be approved.”

Damage estimates from the 2022 storm range from between $1-5 million.
