Spending time by the water this long weekend? Here are a few safety tips

Jun 30, 2023 | 3:10 PM

As Canadians celebrate Canada’s birthday this weekend, the Lifesaving Society is reminding Albertans of a few safety tips when they are in, on and around water.

They say the four Water Smart® key messages to keep in mind:

  1. Stay Within Arms’ Reach and Provide Active Adult Supervision whether at a lake, river, pool or bathtub, closely and constantly watch children when they are in or around any type of water. Consider designating an adult to supervise children swimming. Always keep young children within arms’ reach of an adult. Most children were alone and playing near water when they fell in and drowned.
  2. Don’t Drink and Drown – alcohol consumption is a major risk factor in boating-related fatalities. Alcohol influences balance, coordination, and judgement, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure, wind, waves and dehydration, making it more difficult to get yourself out of trouble.
  3. Always Wear a Life Jacket – not wearing a life jacket is a major risk factor in boating-related fatalities. Check the label to confirm the life jacket is Transport Canada approved. Ensure it is the correct size and fits snugly. The Lifesaving Society strongly advocates for the wearing of life jackets as the most effective tool to reduce boating-related drownings in Canada.
  4. Don’t Boat or Swim Alone – boating or swimming alone is a major risk factor in swimming and boating-related fatalities. Never swim or boat alone. Make sure older children swim with a buddy every time.
