Work on new indoor equestrian centre in Dunmore to begin next week

DUNMORE, AB – The community of Dunmore has seen its fair share of projects being undertaken recently.

Just last month, a new outdoor recreation centre was unveiled for year-round use. Another project being pursued is a new indoor equestrian centre located directly beside the outdoor equestrian facility.

The indoor centre will finally begin to take physical shape next week.

The origins of the project go back to 2010 when Blair Reid, the founder and former president of the Dunmore Equestrian, first brought up the idea. A non-profit was established in 2014 where they worked hard to gather support for creating the current outdoor facility as well as for the future indoor facility. Two years later, the outdoor facility was open to the public.

Cathy Schnell, a director of Dunmore Equestrian, says that the facility will be built to serve the nearly 100,000 residents of the Medicine Hat region and will be capable of hosting various events year-round.

“This building is for everybody. We’ll have programs for youth right on up to seniors programs. Equine facilitative wellness, personal recreation, rodeos, festival events, and sports competitions. We hope to actually promote sports tourism as well as cultural tourism in southeastern Alberta,” Schnell said on Tuesday.

After receiving money from the provincial government, CFEP grants as well as donations from both Cypress County and the Medicine Hat areas, Schnell says that this wouldn’t be possible without the great support received, and the reception of the project has been extremely positive.

“Everybody is so excited. Once we first announced it, I got so many tweets and messages and people are so excited. People were wondering ‘How can I help?’, “What can we do?’, and ‘How can we support this?’ We have an amazing community behind us that is so excited and ready for this,” Schnell added.
