Firefighters remind residents to practice water safety

Jun 13, 2023 | 4:44 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services is reminding community members to take steps to stay safe while enjoying our waterways following a tragic drowning outside Edmonton.

On Sunday first responders and RCMP recovered the body of a teenager who was swept away by the North Saskatchewan River on June 4 just south of Smoky Lake.

To prevent a similar tragedy here, fire crews have a couple safety tips to follow while out enjoying the river.

  • Wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits well and is designed for your activity.
  • Check the weather and river conditions before heading out. Avoid going out on the water during thunderstorms, heavy rain and high water.
  • Know the water, never jump or dive into water without knowing how deep it is.
  • Never swim alone, always go with a friend or family member.
  • Learn swimming skills and know your swimming level.
  • Respect animal and plant species around the riverbanks.
  • Drink non-alcoholic liquids regularly to avoid hydration.
  • Bring proper safety gear like a first-aid kit, insect repellent, sunscreen and enough food and water.
  • Follow regulations and signs posted around the river.

Capt. Jason Labash of the city fire department also recommends creating a plan and sharing it with someone you know.

“Tell someone where you’re going, where you’re going to launch, what time you should be back. Arrange someone to pick you up, perhaps in Strathcona {Island Park} or something like that and an estimated time when you’ll be there. Carry a cellphone, you can also carry a whistle,” says Labash.

Firefighters say they have seen an increase in people accessing the river system since the pandemic.

The highest volume of traffic is concentrated within city limits on the weekends.
