Local girls volleyball team clinches silver medal at nationals

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Rattlers U14 girls volleyball team secured a tier-two silver medal at Nationals in Winnipeg earlier this month.

The local team has been working hard since November, in hopes of setting themselves up for success. Going to Nationals was a first-time experience for most of the players, including 14 year old Chloe Kube.

Chloe’s favourite part of the experience was playing new teams from across Canada.

“It was also like a really cool experience to go out of province and play, like see what other teams are like outside of the province. So that was cool to see some really good teams and not just play the teams that you’re used to playing,” Chloe explains.

While placing second can cause disappointment for some sports teams, Chloe says it didn’t hinder their experience.

“It was a little bit disappointing, but cuz it was so close, obviously. But it was just really exciting to be in the final even and to get a medal, like a national medal, that was really exciting,” says Chloe.

Chloe began playing volleyball because of her mom, Lori Kube. Lori is head coach, along with assistant coaches Stacie Franz and Corrine Peters.

Lori Kube says the lead-up to nationals took a lot of hard work, a challenge her team was up for.

“When we decided we were going to Nationals, that was the drive the whole season. Like, if we’re gonna do this, we gotta do the work, and they did. We practiced, we had great commitment,” Kube says.

Despite the success, Kube says the journey was not without its tests and trials. The team was missing players during some of the games.

“People were playing positions they had never played before. We had injuries. We had a girl come out and set for her very first time ever at nationals,” she emphasizes.

Kube says the team encouraged each other, and pushed forward despite the problems, a sentiment the athletes agreed with.

13 year old Lucy Moch describes how her team helps her as a multi-sport athlete.

“I love these girls. These girls mean everything to me. They’ve been so supportive through everything that I do. I play softball too, so they always support me in that too, so that’s good,” Moch says.

Young athlete Taylor Franz adds, “I think we have a great group of girls. We’re really enthusiastic with each other and we’re not afraid to speak our opinions. I think we’re good at communicating with each other.”

This National medal was just the beginning for the young team, as many of the girls have big hopes for their future in volleyball.

Chloe Kube says, “I would really like to play college volleyball one day, that’d be really cool. I mean, if I could go play in the States that would be nice, but just to play for any place that would pay for my school, that would be cool.”

Many of the players plan on participating in beach volleyball and developmental camps during the summer, now that the regular volleyball season has wrapped up.
