LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents of numerous communities are advised of worsening air quality and visibility.

Environment Canada has extended special air quality statements to areas in southern Alberta to the west of Grassy Lake.

The special air quality statements also apply to all of central Alberta, most of northern Alberta, and large sections of B.C. and Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada said in a statement, “Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health, even at low concentrations. Everyone can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke.”

“Stop or reduce your activity level if breathing becomes uncomfortable or you or someone in your care feel unwell,” adds Environment Canada. “Contact your health care provider or local health authority if you develop severe symptoms or need advice.”

The public is asked to stay indoors as much as possible for the time being.

People with lung or heart disease, as well as older adults, children, pregnant women, and those are work outdoors are at a higher risk of experiencing the negative effects of wildfire smoke.

More details on the special air quality statements can be found on the Environment Canada website.
