Animal Food Bank finds animals forgotten during Alberta wildfires; pet food needed

May 9, 2023 | 5:29 PM

MEDICINE HAT, ABAnimal Food Bank is finding that pets are being forgotten in the midst of the Alberta wildfires.

Nicole Frey, the founder of the Animal Food Bank, a volunteer-run advocacy group in Medicine Hat, says over the last few days, there’s been an expressed need from evacuation centres across the province for pet food.

Frey says it’s important to ensure there’s food, considering access to pet food gets complicated during a wildfire.

“We want to make sure that anybody who’s been evacuated from their home isn’t struggling to feed their pets. It gets a bit complicated because normally people who would be able to afford dog food can’t access it, so it’s very important to step in and ensure that no pet goes hungry,” said Frey.

So far one evacuation centre has expressed a need for rabbit food, hamster food, cat toys, dog collars and kennels.

The local Pet Valu is also partnering with the Animal Food Bank, offering a 10 per cent on household brand foods purchased for the evacuation centres.

Shipments are being sent everyday this week to various centres, and if interested in contributing, you can drop off your donations directly to Animal Food Bank or at one of the Pet Valu locations.
