Service dogs begin training with mobility devices after donation

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It can take up to two years to train a service dog and familiarize it with various social experiences.

To help with the training of local service dogs, Medicine Hat College has received a $7,500 donation from Adapt Mobility for mobility devices, including power wheelchairs, scooters and walkers.

Instructor of the service dog and canine studies management, Marissa Jordan, says this addition will help the dogs in their training.

“What it does is it socializes the dogs for equipment, so they’ll be able to learn how to wake and move around it safely, where they need to be in relation to the equipment,” said Jordan.

To prepare the dogs in a controlled environment, the trainers can also help prevent the animals from becoming fearful in a public space.

“When they’re out working or in the community, they have that experience in a controlled and trained environment, so it kind of prevents any concerns that may happen with the dogs if they were to become fearful of the equipment or anything like that – because we’re in control of how we’re using it and how we’re training them with it,” said Jordan.

Jordan notices the mobility aids benefit the students too.

“What I’ve noticed is it not only helps the dogs but it helps our students as well because they get that piece of learning how to use the mobility devices and what they’re clients may be seeing down the road would be, how they’re using the mobility devices,” said Jordan.

The mobile devices will help the dogs become good model citizens and be welcome into different places in the community.
