City’s managing director of energy and infrastructure resigning

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The head of the City of Medicine Hat’s energy and infrastructure department will resign next month.

Managing director Brad Maynes joined the city as the general manager of the natural gas and petroleum division about eight years ago. Four years ago his role expanded to include the city’s power and infrastructure functions at a managing director level.

Maynes, who intends to return to the private sector, says it’s been a tremendous honour to be part of the community and City Hall.

“We accomplished much over the last eight years and the city is now in a much healthier financial position and is well set up to participate in the energy transition,” he says in a release.

The city says Maynes led a number of complex initiatives related to the city’s energy and infrastructure portfolio including shoring up the losses in the oil and gas division, urban gas well management, launching the city’s efforts to explore hydrogen and carbon capture utilization and storage, and the construction of Unit 17.

“Brad’s leadership and expertise has played a significant role in leading the city organization through a challenging era of energy transition,” says city manager Ann Mitchell. “I would like to offer my personal thanks to Brad and wish him the best in his future endeavours.”

The city says a transitional leadership plan for the division is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

In December, Brian Mastel announced he would step down as the head of public services in January. Brian Stauth has stepped into that position and will stay until he retires in March 2024.
