MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat city council voted to establish this year’s property tax rates.

Property taxes for single family and multi family properties will be increased by 2.7 per cent while non-residential properties like businesses will only increase by 0.4 per cent.

The city is dealing with a growth of over $1.1 million higher than the assessed revenue budget that was approved back in December 2022.

That means the tax revenue budget the city requires to operate has increased to just over $85.3 million for 2023.

Single family homeowners should expect to see an increase of around $74 while business owners will see an average increase of $86.

However property taxes for multi-family dwellings are expected to climb by an average of $281.

Councillor Cassi Hider says the decision supports commercial growth in the city.

“We definitely need incentive for industry and small businesses to come to Medicine Hat. We have hit a bit of a lull and we got to give those guys a break. We have tons of business people in our community, they’ve paid their way and it’s time to have a balance,” says Hider.

“We all have to pay the tax man but they bring in some great opportunities for Medicine Hat and we need to take care of them,” adds Hider.

2023 tax notices will be mailed to Medicine Hat residents on May 19.
