LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man is running across Alberta in four days to raise money for Autism Speaks Canada.

Austin Sedgwick began his trek on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the B.C.-Alberta border. By the end of the second day, he reached Taber. He left on April 24, aiming to reach Medicine Hat by the end of the day on Monday.

Sedgwick’s goal is to raise $22,202.55 by the end of his run. He began the 96-hour continuous timer as soon as he got his first donation and left from the B.C. border.

This year is not the first year that Sedgwick has undertaken the journey. He ran to raise funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation in 2020, mental health services in 2021, and Spinal Cord Injuries Alberta last year.

Sedgwick said his path to begin running was unusual, beginning on a dare from his friend.

“I was watching the Calgary Marathon at my buddy’s house back in 2019, and he called me too chicken to run a 50k.” said Sedgwick

Sedgwick said he signed up for the Calgary Marathon in 2020 and decided to do his fundraiser after seeing how much good the marathon does.

He originally thought the run would be a one-time thing, but has continued to help out organizations that are important to him.

“The very first year, I said I was done running, and here we are running across Alberta for the fourth year,” said Sedgwick.

After the cross-province run, Sedgwick says he will run in the Calgary Marathon on May 28, 2023.

Any donations to Austin’s run can be made on his page at raceroster.com
