LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced additional funding for the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program.

As part of the 2023 provincial budget, the government said it is adding $240 million over three years for the program.

According to the province, the PDD program currently aids nearly 12,900 people in Alberta with services such as home living supports, respite care, community access, education, employment, and specialized supports to help people with additional needs.

With the new funding, Minister of Seniors, Community, and Social Services Jeremy Nixon said approximately 500 additional people who are on wait lists will enter the program this year.

“In Alberta, we are committed to ensuring that those living with disabilities, young and old, can get the care they need,” said Nixon. “Our investments into the disability sector will make life better for those living with disabilities and their families with easier access to programs and support.”

The province said that those who are on the wait list will be added to the program on a first-come-first-served basis.

Alberta Council of Disability Services CEO Andrea Hesse said the funding from the government will go a long way in assisting many Albertans.

“These investments will ensure that individuals with disabilities can access the services they need, and that organizations can effectively deliver quality supports to the individuals they serve,” said Hesse. “We sincerely appreciate the government’s strong commitment to community disability services.”

Total funding for the PDD program is $1.1 billion.
