MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service is warning the public of a scam after a fraudster posing as a lawyer was able to take money from a local resident.

On Wednesday police say a scammer posed as a lawyer on behalf of the victim’s grandchild and convinced the victim their family member required money for a bailout.

The suspect then attended the victims house and was able to pick up an undisclosed amount of cash.

The scam is known as the “Grandparent Scam” where fraudsters pose as a family member or friend who is in urgent need of money.

Medicine Hat Police say over the past 48 hours they’ve received multiple reports from local residents advising they have been the victim of the scam or have received a call from a fraudster.

Often the scammer will call, posing as a grandchild, saying they have been arrested while traveling abroad and request money to be sent through transfer companies like Western Union or MoneyGram.

Inspector Brent Secondiak says it’s a concerning trend, especially when the suspect shows up at the victim’s residence.

“quite concerning there was a person here who physically took the money from a couple here, victims within the city and that’s something we’re very concerned with,” says Secondiak.

“Historically and typically its e-transfers or money sent through couriers to various locations but it’s the first time I recall here someone physically went and obtained funds from someone,” adds Secondiak.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is asking the public for any information to be shared to prevent others from falling victim to the scam. To report any suspicious activity you can call the Medicine Hat Police Service non-emergency line (403-529-8481)
