EDMONTON, AB – Alberta Health announced that COVID-19 testing and isolation recommendations are set to change effective April 1, 2023.

In a series of tweets on March 22, 2023, Alberta Health indicated that the province is moving towards a more sustainable approach to COVID-19.

According to the public health agency, the previously recommended isolation period of five days will no longer be required, except for health care workers.

However, those with respiratory virus symptoms or who test positive for any respiratory illness are recommended to stay home for as long as necessary to minimize transmission.

Press Secretary for Alberta Health, Scott Johnston, explained, “Alberta Health is taking the next step toward aligning public health recommendations, such as testing and isolation, across all acute respiratory viral illnesses.”

Johnston continued, “It’s still important for Albertans to follow general health guidance for any respiratory virus throughout the year – monitor for symptoms, test when necessary, and stay home when sick.”

Starting in April, rapid antigen tests will be the recommended COVID-19 test for most Albertans, including health care workers.

This change is set to help support the closure of Alberta Health Services Assessment Centres, also known as COVID-19 testing centres, on March 31.

The province encourages people to monitor symptoms and access free rapid test kits at pharmacies across Alberta when sick.

All mandatory public health restriction were lifted on June 14, 2022.
