Feb 23, 2023 | 9:26 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Extreme cold warnings remain in effect Thursday for all of Alberta and many other parts of Canada. Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

The weather service says extremely cold wind chill values near -40 C continue. The wind chill may moderate during the day but the extreme cold will persist until the weekend.

The risks from extreme cold are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

People are urged to watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

In addition to Alberta, all of Saskatchewan is also under an extreme cold warning today. Parts of B.C., the southern part of Manitoba, northern Ontario and Quebec and the northern tip of Newfoundland.
