Free library card incentive encourages more users to access services

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The public library has seen more people come through its doors since it introduced its free card initiative.

For over a year residents have been able to receive a free library card through a sponsorship program.

By teaming up with sponsor Elizabeth McNally, a local realtor, the program gives everyone in the community a chance to access the all resources provided by the public library.

“I’ve been coming to the library since I was little so I love the library,” said McNally.

“There’s just something special about it. It’s just this great environment, it’s free, it’s safe. You come here to learn something, it’s so good for everybody.”

The initiative has removed barriers for people who simply can’t afford a library card.

“It has made us busier, that is for sure. So they are taking out more content. They are coming to the library. They are physically here in the building,” said Marina Boese, Head of Marketing Services with the public library.

They are taking advantage of our programming which is always free with your card, give or take a few programs that have an entry fee. They are taking out everything from books to video games.”

All you need is one piece of ID with your address on it to claim your free library card.
