STEM conference held at Medicine Hat High School

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The number of women in the sciences is growing, but there’s still a need for more.

The Praxis Science Outreach organization is continuing their efforts in inspiring young women in southeastern Alberta.

Praxis held their 31st annual conference, aimed at getting more girls involved in the sciences, at Medicine Hat High School on Jan. 30th.

At the event, 36 students shadowed a professional in the morning and then attended two workshops.

The workshops focused on both common and obscure workshops, including forensics with the Medicine Hat Police Service, Canadian Fertilizers performing a lab titration and a food inspection with AHS.

Patty Rooks, the Senior Consultant of the Praxis program, says the job shadowing portion really helps break those stereotypes.

“I think that’s where the morning portion comes in, or even in the afternoon, where if you are a female, you can do these careers, and we hope they are encouraged to think outside the box,” said Rooks.

She says the program helps girls to consider a career in sciences, whether in power engineering or nursing, and not be intimidated by the idea.

“The program really aims to encourage women to pursue their passions,” said Rooks.

Rooks says the program is leading more females to either volunteer and join a STEM (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics) profession.
