Rattlers Roundup: Runners place high, break school records at indoor track meet

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat College Rattlers indoor track team ran its way to 10 top-five finishes and five school records at the first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference indoor meet of the season.

Rookie Justin Jager placed second in the men’s 300m in a time of 37.95, 23 one-hundredths behind winner Kwasi Frampong from SAIT Polytechnic. Jager’s smashed the MHC 300m record by two seconds. Jager ran lead for the third-place 4×200 relay, another school record, and the fourth-place 4×400 relay.

Brannon Sumner took four seconds off his own school record in the men’s 1000m, clocking a time of 2:45, good for fifth place. Sumner also placed fourth in the men’s 600m and ran the anchor leg on both Rattlers relays.

Maddy Scrimger’s time of 3:26 established a Rattlers’ record in the women’s 1000m by seven seconds. She also ran on the record-setting 4×200 relay team and the 4×400 relay, both of which placed third.

Other top five Rattlers finishes were Pyper Gill (third in the women’s 3000m) and Cheldynn Molnar (fourth in the women’s 300m).

In the unofficial team standings, the Rattlers men placed fourth of 10 ACAC teams, while the women were fifth.

Next up for the team is the Medicine Hat Panthers indoor meet on Feb. 18.

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s basketball team was the only school squad to pick up a win this weekend.

On the road for a two-game set against Briercrest College, the men won 87-76 on Saturday, one day after losing an 87-86 nailbiter.

Also on the road against Briercrest, the Rattler women saw a drastic improvement between Friday and Saturday but still came out on the losing end of the score. An 85-40 loss on Friday was followed by a much more competitive 65-63 loss on Saturday.

The teams play twice against St. Mary’s University this weekend, on the road Friday and at home on Saturday.

Back in Medicine Hat, the Rattlers volleyball teams hosted Briercrest.

The men’s team lost three sets to none on Friday and three sets to one on Saturday. The women lost three sets to one on Friday and were blanked three sets to none on Saturday.

The next games on the volleyball teams’ schedules are a home-and-home series against Lethbridge College on Feb. 3-4, starting in Lethbridge.
