LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge’s largest post-secondary school is being recognized for its ability to conduct research.

Research Infosource has released its annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities.

It ranks universities in relation to their research incomes.

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) was listed at 39th place.

In the 2021 fiscal year, the U of L had a total of $18,184,000 in sponsored research income, an increase of 1.5 percent from the previous term.

That averages out to $52,000 per faculty member and $26,200 per graduate student.

Dr. Dena McMartin, U of L Vice President of Research, says many of their researchers are focused on practical solutions to real-world problems.

“The partnerships we have forged in recent years highlight the fact our researchers are helping solve important issues facing small and big businesses, industrial partners, agri-food, tech and many other sectors,” says McMartin. “We have long excelled in fundamental research, something that continues to earn strong support from our federal granting partners, and more recently garnered the attention of valuable partners who recognize our researchers have answers to issues they need addressed.”

One recent example of research being conducted out of the U of L is Dr. Michele Konschuh’s investigation into the appearance of blackleg of potato, a disease that can decrease potato yields by 20 to 25 per cent.

Another involves researchers at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience looking into plant-inspired biopharmaceutical solutions to Parkinson’s disease.

The full list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities can be found on the Research Infosource website.
