Alberta premier rejects nurses’ call for indoor mask mandate

Premier Danielle Smith has rejected a call by a nurses union for her government to impose a mask mandate in indoor public spaces over the holidays.
The United Nurses of Alberta made the demand after Alberta Health Services announced an emergency situation at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton due to a “surge” of kids sick with respiratory viruses.
Smith says she is aware of the surge of child patients but her United Conservative Party government will continue its policy of recommending – but not requiring – masks.
Alberta physicians worry the surge in influenza and other viruses could last several more months.
