Judge grants bail to former RCMP intelligence official accused of leaking secrets

Dec 21, 2022 | 3:11 PM

OTTAWA — An RCMP intelligence official accused of violating Canada’s secrecy law has been granted bail.

The reasons for Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger’s decision Wednesday in the case of Cameron Jay Ortis are covered by a publication ban.

Ortis was taken into custody in Ottawa on Sept. 12, 2019.

The former head of the RCMP’s National Intelligence Co-ordination Centre is charged with breaching the Security of Information Act as well as two Criminal Code offences.

An eight-week judge and jury trial for Ortis is slated to begin next October.

Ortis had been granted bail in 2019 but he was sent back to custody in November of that year as a result of a review requested by the Crown.
