Nov 29, 2022 | 4:57 PM

The United Nations launched their UNite! campaign on November 25; which is 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls around the world. The campaign will come to an end on December 10, International Human Rights Day.

The campaign aims to encourage society to stand up with women’s rights activists, support the feminist movement, resist rollback on women’s rights and end violence against women and girls.

Further, the logo ‘Orange the World’ is being used by the campaign, to symbolize a brighter future.

And in Medicine Hat, The Women’s Shelter Society serves about 1400 people a year, and the majority of their clients are women and children.

Peggy Revell, Community Education and Awareness Coordinator at the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society says, there are ways individuals can help those experiencing gender-based violence.

“The number one thing, especially when it comes to family violence, is just being there for the person, and being a friend, being a supportive person, believing them, and asking what they need, what they need to be safe, and then supporting them as they reach out for supports, like the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter,” she says.

“We have a 24/7 helpline, and we just in November launched a 24/7 text line, and web chat, so support is always available.”

For 24/7 support, call (403) 529-1091, Toll-Free 1(800) 661-7949, and Text Line (587) 850-5885.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society will be hosting their annual vigil on December 6, at 5:30 PM at Medicine Hat College (Centennial Hall) . The Vigil is to mark Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against women; a day to honour the victims of the Montreal Massacre, and all who have been impacted by gender-based violence.
