Medicine Hat Fire Services offer tips for long winter drives

Nov 4, 2022 | 4:41 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Long winter road trips require greater preparation than in the warmer months. Things like having an emergency kit with you can make all the difference.

In an emergency kit, there should be essentials like a warm jacket, gloves, proper footwear and non-perishable food that can keep you sustained for an extended stay on the road.

Outside of the bare minimum, one can extend their kit by carrying an ice scraper, sand or gravel, booster cables and a small shovel to be even further prepared to help get themselves out of a poor situation.

Although in the summer, most would make sure they have enough fuel to make it to their destination or the next station. It is recommended to have extra fuel in the event one were to be stuck on the road for a long period.

Merrick Brown, manager of support services with Medicine Hat Fire, says poor conditions are not uncommon in Alberta, and if not prepared the damage can happen quickly.

“We have had situations where people are stuck on the road for extended periods of time, to the point they are stuck overnight. So just making sure you have the food, the fuel and everything to keep you warm. So that…It can take time for emergency responders to get you so just make sure you have everything available to you to keep you safe.”
