Cost of natural gas stays under provincial rebate trigger point

Nov 1, 2022 | 11:59 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The cost of natural gas rising slightly for city utility customers this month and the cost of electricity is going down a little.

The City of Medicine Hat released its November utility rates today.

The floating natural gas rate is set at $5.507 per gigajoule this month, down from the October rate of $5.114. The rate is in the middle of the $5.372 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $5.641 set by Direct Energy.

The fixed rate for 2022 is $4.35 per GJ, as of Jan. 1.

The provincial natural gas rebate program came into effect Oct. 1, but because of the low rates, customers will once again not get any money this month. The rebate only kicks in if the default natural gas rate from any of the regulated utility providers is above $6.50 per gigajoule. If that happens, the government will provide rebates to all eligible consumers that month covering the difference between $6.50 and the highest regulated rate.

Electricity customers on the floating rate will pay 17.734 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, up from 18.723 cents per kilowatt-hour in October. This month’s electricity price falls between the high of 18.245 cents set by Enmax and the low of 17.393 Epcor (outside Edmonton).

The city’s fixed rate is 8 cents per kilowatt-hour for 2022.

The province is rebating $50 per month on electricity bills until the end of 2022.
