Employers, job seekers to meet at MHC Career Expo

Oct 25, 2022 | 2:51 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Employers and job seekers have struggled to connect over the past couple of years, leaving many jobs open even as many people are looking for work.

Close to 50 exhibitors will be face-to-face with potential employees at Wednesday’s Career Expo at Medicine Hat College.

The YMCA of Medicine Hat will have a table at the Expo. Jodie Engbert says organizations like hers have done virtual and drive-thru job fairs but they have their limitations and it’s exciting to be back in person.

Some of the benefits are that job seekers can make better impressions and ask more questions in their preferred path and also explore different potential industries they may not have considered.

Trades, health care and innovation are just a few of the industries that will be represented at the Career Expo.

Engbert, the YMCA’s director of employment services, says they have quite a few positions within the child and youth programs.

“We are specifically looking for people for our before and after school programs. I know that we have some challenges with the afternoon so individuals that are kind of available for the 3 to 6 o’clock time slot that would love to come and interact with children. Definitely an awesome position available for some people.”

“We also have positions available for youth workers. These would be full-time positions that are available. We’d be looking for somebody kind of flexible hours but definitely to work with youth in our programming as well.”

The YMCA will be pulling double duty, looking for staff itself and promoting its own employment services.

“We have a bunch of programs and services that are available to help people get back to work,” Engbert says. “So if they’re looking for assistance with something like a resume or job search or interview coaching support to get them ready to attend a job fair and to get ready for that job, those are all services that we can help people with at our employment centre. So we’re definitely here for the community we’re excited to reconnect with everybody.”

She adds the Y does in-house job fairs throughout the year and encourages job seekers to inquire about those often.

The Career Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the college’s Centennial Hall and is open to the community.
