Children’s Advil and Tylenol shortage continues

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A local pharmacist says two factors are leading to a significant shortage of children’s Advil and Tylenol across Canada.

“There is a problem in the supply chain, in that COVID depleted all the warehouses, and they haven’t been able to manufacture enough. They are still in the process of making more and ramping up, but it will take a few more months before you see any significant quantity,” says Greg Bueckert, chief pharmacist at Greg’s Remedy’s Rx.

Bueckert adds panic buying did partially lead to the shortage as well.

Available supplies of the medications on shelves are said to go very quickly.

Though until supply gets back to normal by December, alternate options can be used.

“You can use adult strengths … it goes by weight age, so a pharmacist can calculate out with the right dose for the age of the child, if they could swallow, if not, you can break the tablets up and courter them, um dissolve them, the old style was to crush them and put them into peanut butter, or something along those lines” says Bueckert.

With flu season here, demand for children’s medication is at its peak, Bueckert adds.
