Promoting menstrual health in Alberta

Oct 8, 2022 | 7:00 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–It is an unfortunate reality facing many young girls and woman in Alberta…they simply can’t afford the cost of accessing products needed to manage their monthly periods.

In an effort to address period poverty, the provincial government is investing $260,000 in Period Promise–a partnership with the United Way to provide free menstrual products in 50 schools across the province.

Funding will go towards installing period product dispensers in bathrooms. There will also be an educational campaign aimed at destigmatizing women’s health issues including periods.

The United Way in Central Alberta says data from a pilot project at four Red Deer schools underlines the need for barrier-free access to pads and tampons. The organization says 62 percent of respondents indicated they have left or missed school because period products were not available.

Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, the Associate Minister of Status of Women says “periods are a natural part of life, but when individuals don’t have adequate products and information, it can seriously impact their health.”

Resources for workplaces, including materials to run period product donation drives and to sign on as a designated Period Promise employer, are available on local United Way websites.
