Local woman wants stronger actions by owners whose dogs are an aggressive breed

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Astra Brauner was following her regular routine last Friday morning and was about to take her leashed dog Bosco out for a walk. That’s when an unleashed large pitbull charged toward them.

She was able to pull her dog back enough that it was able to avoid major injury. Brauner says though that Bosco has been timid since the event took place.

She says she called police after a verbal altercation between Brauner and the owner of the pitbull.

When the police arrived the attacking dog and owner had left the scene, and Medicine Hat Police Service has not been able to get in contact with that person.

Brauner says she wants to see stronger measures taken by owners to prevent similar attacks.

“When it comes to dogs – and not just pitbulls, any dogs that aren’t on a leash – if you have a dog that’s known to be an aggressive breed, don’t go to dog parks and let it off when there’s other dogs running around because that’s just an accident waiting to happen,” she says.

Brauner adds it’s up to the owner to control their dogs and should learn how to do so before taking in a pet.

In July, another small dog was fatally attacked by a pitbull that was off-leash at the time.

A vicious dog hearing was held last month to determine the dog’s fate and a decision is expected to be made within the next couple of weeks.
