Saskatchewan RCMP confirm second stabbing suspect is dead

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Saskatchewan RCMP confirmed during a media briefing Wednesday evening that stabbing suspect Myles Sanderson is dead.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore says Sanderson went into medical distress shortly after being taken into custody near Rosthern, Sask.

EMS were called and Sanderson was transported to hospital in Saskatoon where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is being conducted to confirm the cause of death but results won’t be released as it is part of the on-going investigation.

Blackmore went over the timing of the events prior to Sanderson’s arrest. Around 2:07 p.m., RCMP in Wakaw received a report of a break and enter. According to a caller Sanderson was reportedly standing outside a residence armed with a knife.

Sanderson fled the area in a white Chevy Avalanche and an emergency alert was issued to warn residents in Wakaw and anyone travelling on the highway.

All available RCMP units including Saskatoon Police Service units responded. An officer from the Rosthern detachment spotted the vehicle and clocked it going approximately 150 kilometers per hour on Highway 11.

Police directed the vehicle being driven by Sanderson off the road and into the ditch where he was taken into custody. Blackmore confirms a knife was found inside the vehicle Sanderson had been driving.

Blackmore called the magnitude of this operation “immense” with 160 RCMP, Municipal police, and civilians working around the clock.

Sanderson and his brother Damien were the subjects of a massive manhunt following multiple stabbings on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Saskatchewan that left 10 people dead.

Damien Sanderson became the 11th person to die after his body was found outside in a grassy area on the First Nation near one of the crime scenes.

Blackmore says the investigation into the rampage is ongoing. Police have already conducted over 150 interviews and will be speaking to more witnesses and people in the area over the coming days.

As for a motive, Blackmore stated “we may never have an understanding of that motivation….forever it may only be known to Myles.”
