Memorial team roping event kicks off in honour of past community members

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hatters will have an opportunity to dust off their cowboy boots and hat this weekend, when the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede hosts the 11th annual Memory Lane team roping memorial event.

The three-day event starts on Friday and will continue until Sunday and will be free to attend, giving those wanting to take in the rodeo sport plenty of opportunities to do so this long weekend. The event also recently introduced team barrel racing for amateur and professional riders alike.

The event was started by founder George Schreiner, who wanted to honour those who were a part of or close to the roping community who have since passed away.

Schreiner says a big part of honouring and memorializing those in the community is through buckles, which will be given to the event winners. Eighty-nine buckles will be up for grabs this year, which Schreiner says signifies the importance of bringing together the team roping community to remember their friends.

“The families put the buckles up, and then the winners, they get first choice, and if they were second, they get second choice of the buckles, and we have them all around in a big circle,” Schreiner says. “And you know what? A lot of people [that] win them buckles are really looking forward to getting that buckle. They can wear it, they can have it in their trophy case at home in memory of their son or their dad; so it kind of gets a little bit tear-jerky at times.”

A banquet will be held on the Stampede grounds after Saturday’s events, at which time the buckles will be presented by the families to the event winners.

More information about how to get tickets for the banquet or the event itself can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
