Saskatchewan Agriculture says anthrax has been discovered in the rural municipality of Piapot.

As of Monday, it says nine animals have died from the bacteria, which can survive for decades as spores in the soil.

Livestock such as bison, cattle, sheep and goats can be infected when they eat forage contaminated with the spores.

Saskatchewan Agriculture is encouraging all livestock owners to get their animals vaccinated against anthrax.
