The United Conservative Party leadership race has swelled its membership ranks.

The party says there are 123,915 members, more than double the close to 60,000 there were at the start of the leadership race in June.

Cynthia Moore, president of the United Conservative Party, says the numbers prove Alberta’s conservative movement is incredibly strong.

“We’ve experienced massive growth in every riding in the province and it’s put us on a solid footing heading into the next election,” she says in a statement.

Ballots will be mailed to all 123,915 eligible members starting on Sept. 2 and must be received back to the accounting firm overseeing the vote by Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. The results will be announced on Oct. 6 in Calgary.

There are seven candidates vying for the UCP’s top position – Leela Aheer, Todd Loewen, Rebecca Schulz, Rajan Sawhney, Brian Jean, Danielle Smith and Travis Toews. The winner of the party leadership will also become premier.

The first leadership debate took place in Medicine Hat on July 27. The second and final leadership debate is set for Aug. 30 in Edmonton from 6-8 p.m.
