DESERT BLUME, AB – Summer is in the air, and the golf balls are too. The Alberta Senior Men’s Championship is currently underway at Desert Blume Golf Club.

The three-day event run by Alberta Golf will run from Aug. 3-5, with 120 players from across the province to compete not only for the title but for the opportunity to compete at the Canadian championships in Red Deer from Sept. 6-9.

The first round teed off early Wednesday morning. Low 60s and ties will make the cut following round two on Thursday.

Trevor Ellerman, general manager of Desert Blume Golf Club, says staff has been hard at work preparing for the large-scale event.

“From our standpoint we’re, probably over the last few weeks, getting the course ready, making sure the turf and the greens are up to speed,” Ellerman says. “From there, having some volunteers to come in and help coordinate all the different things going on; starters, ball-spotters, registration people just to make sure things run smoothly.”

Ellerman says this is the first event of this magnitude to be held under his management and new ownership, and says this event is the perfect way to showcase not only the course itself, but the city as a whole.

“As a championship golf course, it’s always good to host a championship to showcase and to make sure people know and get to see and experience Desert Blume, particularly at this time of year when the course is in such great shape, and today we have a little bit of wind and sort of showcases Medicine Hat at its best,” says Ellerman. “It’s hot, windy and you get a little desert oasis down here, so it’s good for people from different parts of the province to see that.”

The local golf contingent is well-represented at the event, with Desert Blume’s Bill Bishop and Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club’s Kelly Risling both sitting at two over par after their first rounds.
