MEDICINE HAT, AB– They came and competed, all to raise money to support families in need in Medicine Hat.

The first annual race for hunger took place over the weekend. Multiple teams stepped up with Team Crew, Amber Hanson and Chelsea Purves coming out on top.

Over $33,000 was raised during the event.

Melissa Mullis executive director of the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub says the money will go towards supporting the growing number of people they see come through their doors.

Mullis says right now the need has never been greater, and the Root Cellar has been seeing people that wouldn’t normally access their services.

” People are having to make a decision, ‘Do I pay for gas ? Do I pay for food ? Or do I pay my utility bill? and I think having us as an available service, gives people the opportunity to not make those hard decisions and to know that we can support them with food,” she said.

Mullis says she is incredibly thankful for all the donors and their support.
