Alberta to gain three additional seats in Parliament

Jul 8, 2022 | 2:07 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces that will soon have a greater level of representation in the federal government.

Following the adoption of An Act to amend the Constitution Act, 1867 (electoral representation) in the House of Commons on June 23, Canada’s chief electoral officer, Stéphane Perrault, has confirmed the new seat allocation.

By April 2024 at the earliest, Alberta will have 37 Members of Parliament, an increase from the current 34.

The number of seats in the House of Commons is recalculated every 10 years to account for changes in the country’s population.

As of the 2021 federal census, Alberta had 11.66 per cent of Canada’s total population. Once work on seat reallocation is complete, 10.88 per cent of House of Commons members will be from Alberta.

B.C. and Ontario will each get one additional federal riding while Quebec will lose one.

In total, Canada will have 342 elected members of the federal government, up from the current 338.

It is unclear at this time what the new electoral maps will look like.
