Study finds heart attack drug also an effective stroke treatment

A national study has found a drug normally used to dissolve blood clots in heart attack victims can also be used for those who suffer a stroke.

The two-year clinical trial from the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto involved 1,600 stroke patients across the country.

It found that Tenecteplase, commonly used as a clot buster for heart attacks, is also an effective treatment for acute strokes.

Dr. Bijoy Menon, the co-principal investigator of the study from Calgary, says the drug could revolutionize stroke treatment.
