MEDICINE HAT, AB – A nagging back injury suffered before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics will keep Sage Watson from next month’s World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

The Seven Persons athlete says she is stepping back from racing for the rest of the season to fully recover and give her body the break it needs and deserves.

Watson says she injured her back a month and a half out from the Olympics and did everything she could to get ready. She was part of Team Canada’s women’s 4×400 metre relay team that placed fourth and also competed in the women’s 400 metre hurdles.

In a Facebook post, she says she didn’t have the Olympics she wanted and went into this year wanting to do better than last year but the injury has lingered.

“For years I have been looking forward to World Championships in Oregon so it will be sad not being there but I look forward to cheering on my team mates and friends as they compete,” she wrote.

She finishes by writing “As always I am so grateful for all the support I have and can’t wait to get back healthy so I can step on the track ready to give it my all.”

Still on the horizon for Watson is another world championships the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
