Bassano emergency department to be closed overnight for majority of summer

BASSANO — A southern Alberta emergency department will be closed overnight four days a week over the summer and acute care beds will temporarily be consolidated to another community about 50 km away.

Alberta Health Services says the Bassano Health Centre emergency department will be “closed from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Mondays to Thursdays due to lack of physician coverage beginning June 1 and continuing throughout June, July and August.”

The emergency department will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be open for the entire weekend, including overnights.

The Bassano Health Centre emergency department was closed for 15 hours beginning on May 24 due to lack of physician coverage.

As well, Bassano Health Centre’s four acute care beds will be temporarily consolidated to the Brooks Health Centre until mid-September.

In a statement, AHS says it is working to ensure Bassano residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time and that nursing staff will remain on-site to provide care for inpatients.

Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7, for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency.
