MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta Sheriffs are taking part in the annual inspection of commercial vehicles on provincial highways.

Roadcheck is done every year by agencies belonging to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Inspectors are checking vehicles at the Dunmore weigh scales as part of the program.

Sgt. Brian Davyduke is the Alberta coordinator for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

He says over the past five years, inspections like these have resulted in 26 to 39 per cent of vehicles taken out of service, with two common violations flagged.

“Typically the two highest out of service violations that we find are cargo securement and brake systems,” says Davyduke.

Things like lighting are also common issues that inspectors see issues with according to Davyduke.

Violators have the option of fixing the problem at the inspection site, or if that’s not possible, having their vehicle taken to another location for service.

In addition to a visual inspection of commercial vehicles, inspectors will also be checking the credentials of the drivers.

The three-day program wraps up Thursday.
