Natural gas rate adjusted downward for May

May 5, 2022 | 11:11 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat utility customers received a shock this week when the floating natural gas rate for May nearly doubled to $8.546 per gigajoule.

Now they’re getting some relief.

Modified rates have been approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), which is used by the city to set its rates on the average set by other providers in the province.

Natural gas from the city will now cost $6.441 this month, between the adjusted rates of $6.482 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $6.399 set by Direct Energy.

According to the city, the revised rates approved by the AUC are meant to lower the rate to a level that better represents the forecast market prices for May 2022. The change represents a deviation to the industry-established deferral mechanism.

The city says Direct Energy and Apex gas commodity rates are designed to include what is known as a “true-up” of over- or under-collected amounts from the previous month. Large variances from higher-than-expected price and load going into April 2022 caused a large opening balance in their respective deferral accounts. To reduce the effect of this increase on consumers, the deferral balances will be carried forward and applied to future rate filings.
