Impacts from avian flu on human health are rare: Hinshaw

May 4, 2022 | 4:53 PM

The presence of avian flu in our province is leading to questions about what this means for our personal health.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health addressed those at Wednesday’s COVID-19 update.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw said it’s very rare for a person to be infected and so far no cases have been reported in Alberta. There is currently one case under investigation in the U.S. in someone which Hinshaw said had “very close contact” with infected poultry.

This week Alberta Health Services public health nurses will call impacted farmers to discuss human health implications, and ways to keep their families, workers and other people on the farms healthy, said Hinshaw.

She added it is safe to eat poultry or poultry products as long as they are properly prepared, as the avian influenza virus is destroyed at the temperatures required to cook meat or eggs.

More information is available on the provincial government’s website.
