MEDICINE HAT, AB – Organizations in Medicine Hat are marking Earth Day this weekend by beautifying the city.

There are opportunities for you to help and also to learn what you can do to protect the planet long-term.

About 55 employees of Methanex are at the Big Marble Go Centre and Methanex Bowl on Friday for a community cleanup.

On Saturday, members of the South East Alberta Watershed Alliance will host a volunteer event at Connaught Pond from 9 am. to noon. There will be three different activities: trash picking, wildflower, native plants and invasive species identification, and caring for young cottonwoods.

People are asked to meet at the west parking lot at 8:50 a.m. for a welcome and safety instructions. SEAWA advises people to bring their own refreshments and have appropriate clothing (rubber boots and gloves) for watering cottonwoods and fetching water from the pond.

There will also be plant identification led by Martha from Grasslands Naturalists and care of young cottonwoods propagated last summer will be demonstrated by Marilou from SEAWA.

The City of Medicine Hat is promoting a community cleanup this week. You can clean up your own neighbourhood or work on specific areas the city has identified as needing a little more attention.

Police Point Park is hosting its inaugural Earth Day Bash. Five stations will be set up throughout the park with hands-on learning opportunities.

People get a passport, visit each station, complete a challenge and earn a stamp. Drop your completed passport at the Nature Centre and be entered in a prize draw.

Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22 and the theme for 2022 is Invest in Our Planet.
