Over $10,000 raised at fire service Rooftop Camp-out

Two Medicine Hat firefighters braved the elements over the weekend all to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Luke Oegema and Vaughn Row spent the weekend up on the roof of Fire Station 2 on Trans Canada Way for the annual Roof top Camp-out.

“Well I guess it is kind of like camping, but there is no fire, there is no trees or anything like that we are right next to a super busy roadway right between Trans Canada Way and the Highway, lots of cars going by, all we needed is a fire pit and it would have been perfect,” Oegema said.

Despite being a little sleep deprived , the two firemen said the weekend went well, minus the couple times their tent decided to fall down in the middle of the night.

During the three-day event, donations were being accepted at the fire station and online. Fire service member Dylan Gustafson said over $10,000 was raised for the cause.

“I couldn’t be more thankful to everybody who came out and supported us. We know the last couple of years has been difficult financially for a lot of people so to see them come out and support us and support our charity, even when they may be struggling financially it is amazing,” he said.

The Medicine Hat Fire service has been raising money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada since the 1970’s, and they have raised over $300,000 to date.
