Goal Woes

Third shutout loss in a row Saturday for goal deprived Tigers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – To say the Medicine Hat Tigers have been snakebitten of late would be a massive understatement.

Over 200 minutes have passed since the last time the Tigers have found the back of the net, losing their third game in a row via shutout on Saturday 2-0 to the Calgary Hitmen.

Garin Bjorklund followed up Beckett Langkow’s 40-save performance in Red Deer on Friday with another outstanding effort with 37 stops, but offensive help again was near non-existent Saturday for Medicine Hat.

For the second game in a row, the Tigers were only able to muster 13 shots on net with Brayden Peters picking up his third shutout of the year.

Calgary dominated the first period outshooting Medicine Hat by a 14-2 margin, however their only goal came in a fluky fashion with less than five minutes remaining.

Keagan Slaney, playing in his first game for the Hitmen since January 21, let a wrist shot go from the blue line that bounced off the end boards and then rebounded off Bjorklund’s pads into the net.

Calgary held onto that 1-0 lead well into the third period, when leading scorer Riley Fiddler-Schultz cut from the right side of the ice to the left and ripped his 27th of the year into the back of the net with 9:23 remaining.

Bjorklund was pulled for the extra skater, but the Tigers couldn’t get much towards the front of the net as they were blanked for a third straight game.

While the goal scoring has been a major issue for the club, Medicine Hat went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and have now successfully killed off their last 13 infractions in a row.

The rematch between the Tigers and Hitmen will be played Wednesday night at Scotiabank Saddledome with puck drop at 7:00 pm.
