Ottawa under pressure as CP Rail stoppage enters second day as talks continue

Mar 21, 2022 | 12:07 PM

CALGARY – Industry groups that rely on Canadian Pacific Railway are pleading with the federal government to intervene as a work stoppage continues into its second day.

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association president Bob Lowe says if the trains don’t run, farmers only have about two weeks of feed left.

About 3,000 conductors, engineers and train and yard workers at CP Rail hit picket lines over the weekend.

Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan is in Calgary where talks continue between CP Rail and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union.

The company and union have blamed each other for causing the work stoppage, though both spent yesterday talking with federal mediators.

The House of Commons resumed today following a two-week break, so legislation could come immediately if the government decides to intervene.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party would strongly oppose any back-to-work bill on the grounds that it discourages the company from negotiating.
