MEDICINE HAT, AB – In the heart of the downtown core, there is a love for cheesecake brewing. On any given afternoon, at Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes on Third Street people, usually families, walk through the doors enamoured by the cakes created by Bill Woolmer.

The acclaim for his cakes, according to Woolmer has been stretching far beyond the borders of Medicine Hat with his delicacies being sold online around the world, the farthest being New Zealand.

Part of the appeal, according to Woolmer is the unique flavours, from Confetti Cake to Maple Bacon to even Dill Pickle. In fact, Woolmer said, his more unique concoctions often sell out faster than the traditional flavours.

“People want to buy it out of curiosity. They want to know what it tastes like, they want to know, how and why,” Woolmer said.

“I don’t often have plain old cheesecake. Everyone will come in and they will have their cheesecake, that they want to try and then they will have the cheesecake that they will always go to,” he added.

Woolmer’s journey towards making cheesecake wasn’t so clearcut. He moved to Medicine Hat from Calgary to manage an auto dealership and he only started making cheesecakes after a little push from someone at work.

“Basically one of my customers asked me, or challenged me to make a cheesecake, and that was when I was working at one of the dealerships here in town. They actually went out of their way and bought me a spring-fold pan, and the rest is history. I baked the cheesecake and here we are, “:

Woolmer started creating his cheesecake concoctions out of his house. But as the demand grew he said he needed his own commercial kitchen. So that’s when he finally opened his store at the Arcade Plaza in October.

Since opening his doors Woolmer said he is grateful for the community’s support.

To satisfy your craving for cheesecake, his store is open seven days a week from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m.
