Tigers offence sputters against Swift Current in 2-0 shutout loss

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Saturday’s final meetup of the year between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Swift Current Broncos seemed like something out of the NHL’s 1990s trap period.

Offensive chances were few and far between for both sides, as Swift Current’s Isaac Poulter stopped all 19 shots he faced to down the Tigers in shut out fashion.

The Broncos clogged the neutral zone and limited Medicine Hat’s time with the puck to earn the 2-0 win, sweeping the final home-and-home series of the year between the Central Division rivals.

Picking up a 5-1 win last night in Swift Current, the Broncos got out to an early 1-0 start courtesy of Josh Filmon scoring all alone in front of Garin Bjorklund off a set up from below the goal line from Raphael Pelletier less than four minutes in.

Filmon’s eventual game-winner stood as the lone goal for much of Saturday night’s rematch, with the Tigers spending much of the second period on the penalty kill.

While Medicine Hat was perfect while down a man, they struggled to get their offence going and went to the third trailing 1-0.

Broncos forward Connor Hvidston was able to take advantage of some stationary Tigers defenders four minutes into the third, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot to double Swift Current’s lead.

Medicine Hat pulled Bjorklund late and applied pressure on Poulter, who held his ground to earn his fourth shutout of the year and second against the Tigers.

Bjorklund was solid in the loss for the black and orange, stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced in defeat.

Limited to just one goal over the weekend, the Tigers will look to get their offence back on Friday night when they head up the road to take on the Red Deer Rebels.
