‘Feverishly working on things’: Co-op Place show announcements coming soon

Feb 18, 2022 | 3:35 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hatters itching to see live concerts and performances will start to hear show announcements in the next few weeks, says the city’s entertainment and events coordinator.

“We’ve had things booked, we’ve had to reschedule, we’re looking to re-slot things that were there previously we’re looking for new acts,” says Josie Doll. “So there’s a lot of moving parts that go into booking entertainment for the citizens of Medicine Hat. So we are feverishly working on things. We do have a few concert announcements, event announcements to announce for Co-op Place.”

Doll can’t reveal the acts that will be announced yet but says one of them is big for Medicine Hat and thinks it’s something everybody will look forward to.

She says they’re excited to give live entertainment back to Hatters and they want to do it well.

“And we will ramp up again to things that have happened in the past but you can’t just reschedule a large show for two months down the road,” she explains. “It will happen, we’re excited about it and there are good things to come.”

Doll says booking artists and performances into Medicine Hat isn’t as easy as some people might think. Things such as arena versus theatre shows and proximity to other markets are factors.

For her, it starts by deciding which acts they want to bring here and contacting their agents who then works with other facilities of similar size to create a tour.

Doll says it becomes a collaboration between a number of people to schedule the right act at the right time for everybody

Those are events purchased and promoted by the City of Medicine Hat. On the flip side there are promoter-promoted events, says Doll, which a lot of the concerts being announced across Canada are.

“They would have rented a facility, they would have routed that themselves they would have brought that in and assume the risk on all those shows themselves and they’ve presented it,” Doll says. “So there are actually two sides of the entertainment world where we’re purchasing or where someone’s renting from us.”

Tebey on Feb. 20 and Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap on May 5 are two upcoming city-presented shows. Snowed In Comedy Tour on Feb. 22 and Johnny Reid on April 12 and 13 are promoter shows.

Classic Albums Live has two shows – Led Zeppelin on Feb. 23 and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on April 15 – coming soon and Straight No Chaser on March 15 and tribute shows to ABBA, Queen, and Elton John and Ed Sheeran are also on the schedule.
